Her son in high school, Gladys began to rediscover herself by reopening her career as a commercial artist which quickly led to taking art courses in painting. She was particularly drawn to the teaching of an old alumnus from American Academy of Art, Irving Shapiro and discovered the medium of watercolors.

Working from National Geographic imagery in her spare time she reproduced a series of scenes and portraits in watercolors.
